Caption: Iron-oxidizing soil bacterial culture. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a neutrophil chemolithoautotrophic enrichment culture that was isolated from a freshwater sediment. This is currently the only bacterial culture capable of autotropically oxidizing iron in combination with the reduction of nitrate. However, this requires several organisms that work together. The exact role of each organism is not yet known. Magnification: x6700 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
