Caption: Macrophage and T helper cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a macrophage cell (grey) with two T helper cells attached to it. Macrophages are a type of large white blood cell that recognise foreign particles and old blood cells and phagocytose (engulf and digest) them. The cytoplasmic extensions are used for locomotion within the tissues. The T helper cells aer responding to antigens produced by the macrophage, and will secrete chemicals that will activate other T cells that will destroy the material ingested by the macrophage. Magnification: x1900 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
