Caption: Bamboo stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through a bamboo stem (Bambusa vulgaris). Vascular bundles can be seen (red and yellow) containing xylem (larger openings, yellow/blue) and phloem (smaller openings, red) tissues. Xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant, while phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant. Magnification: x44 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
