Caption: Rice grass stem. Light micrograph of a section through a rice grass stem (Oryza sativa). Vascular bundles (small oval structures) can be seen containing xylem (larger openings, red and white) and phloem (smaller openings, dark blue) tissues. Xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant, while phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant. Rice plants have hollow stems, thus there are no tissues seen at centre. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
