Caption: Differential interference contrast (DIC) light micrograph of marine pennate Gyrosigma sp. diatoms. These diatoms are capable of a gliding motility due to the slit (known as a raphe) that runs the length of the body. Diatoms are single-celled algae that exist in huge numbers in marine and freshwater environments. They account for a large proportion of the microscopic plankton that forms the basis of marine food chains. They have ornate, silica-rich cell walls.
