Caption: William Parry (1790-1855) on Melville island. 1863 illustration showing the ships of the British explorer Sir William Parry holed up in the ice at Melville Island. In 1819 Parry was the first European to visit Melville Island, in what is now Canada. His expedition was forced to spend the winter at what is now called 'Winter Harbour', until 1st August 1820, owing to the frozen sea.
