Caption: Wheat stem. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of a wheat grass (Triticum aestivium). The circular structures (orange and green) are vascular bundles, which each consists of xylem (larger circles, orange) and phloem (smaller circles, green) tissues. Xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant and phloem transports carbohydrate and hormones around the plant. The green cells near the bottom edge of the stem are called chlorenchyma and they capture energy from sunlight by photosynthesis. Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
