Caption: Maize stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through a maize plant stem (Zea mays). A vascular bundles (yellow/purple) can be seen containing xylem (larger openings, yellow) and phloem (smaller openings, purple) tissues. Xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant, while phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant. The small yellow blobs (upper left and right) are chloroplasts, which capture energy from sunlight by photosynthesis. Magnification: x230 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
