Caption: African lions. Female african lions (Panthera leo) and young males in scrubland. African lions are predatory carnivores that live in the savannah grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa. Usually between two and four cubs are born in a litter. Many cubs do not survive their first year, being killed by predators or by a male who takes over the pride. Female cubs stay with the pride, while the males leave at around three years of age to find their own pride. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa.
