Caption: Cicada emerging. Close-up of a cicada (superfamily Cicadoidea) emerging as an adult from its nymphal skin. Cicadas live underground as nymphs for most of their lives. In the final nymphal instar (stage), they build an exit tunnel to the surface and emerge. They then moult (shed their skins) on a nearby plant for the last time and emerge as adults. Photographed in Danum Valley Conservation Area, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia.
