Caption: Asterias starfish larva, darkfield light micrograph. This is the planktonic second stage (brachiolaria) of larval development in the common starfish (Asterias rubens). It uses cilia (hair-like structures) on its body for locomotion and has bilateral symmetry. Eventually, the larva sinks to the seabed, where is uses a sucker to attach to the substrate while it undergoes metamorphosis to the adult form. Magnification: x44 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
