Caption: Computer graphics representation of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), a molecule that acts as an intracellular battery of metabolic energy. Energy is stored in the chemical bonds of ATP's phosphate groups, ready to be released when the molecule is split into its di- or monophosphate relatives (ADP or AMP respectively). ATP is formed from ADP or AMP using energy liberated by the breakdown of carbohydrates. Here, wire-drawn forms represent the atomic backbone. The spheres composed of dots show the Van der Waals radii of the atoms - an indication of their physical size.
