Caption: C60 fullerene. Polarised light micrograph of a thin film of buckminsterfullerene. This is a third allotrope of carbon, and consists of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a hollow spherical structure. Since the discovery of the 'buckyball' in the early 1980s, structures with more than 700 carbon atoms have been mooted. Reflected illumination. Magnification x25 at 6x7cm size.
