Caption: Trochite limestone and fossils, polarised light micrograph. This sedimentary rock was originally laid down around 235 million years ago in the Triassic. It is named for the trochite fossils found in it, the traces (visible here) left by ancient animals known as sea lilies. Other fossils found in this rock include bivalve shells, mollusc shells, and brachiopods. This rock, part of the Muschelkalk formation, is from Hornle near Mottlingen, Germany. Thin-section specimen. Magnification: x40 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
