Caption: Rhyolite mineral rock crystals, polarised light micrograph. This rock consists of a silica (silicon dioxide) matrix enriched with sodium and potassium oxides. It is an igneous rock, forming when molten volcanic lava solidifies. The texture of the rock can vary widely, depending upon the conditions under which it forms. This sample is from Traisen in the Nahe valley, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Magnification: x40 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
