Caption: Bird flu portable test development. Scientist working on the development of a portable testing machine for molecular recognition of the avian influenza virus. This technology can detect outbreaks of bird flu in just two hours, whereas current techniques take up to a week. The briefcase-size machine will be used at potential outbreak sites and works by recognising molecules from a swab of human saliva or animal tissue. If the sample is infected with bird flu, it then determines which strain is present. Photographed at Nottingham Trent University, England, UK.
