Caption: Cloud and atmosphere computer model. Computer visualisation of the Earth and vorticity. This is an image from the Global Cloud-Resolving Model (GCRM), a program run on supercomputers that models the Earth’s atmosphere. The Earth is represented as a geodesic grid consisting of 100 million hexagonal cells. Each cell predicts wind, temperature and humidity at a resolution of 4 kilometres between points. Vorticity is the spinning motion of the air and is represented on the simulation as 3D iso-contours above the surface. The GCRM project aims to produce a complete one-year simulation of the Earth’s atmospheric movements at 10-second intervals.
