Carbon nanotechnology. Computer model of buckminsterfullerene (C60) balls in a carbon nanotube. The coloured peaks show electron waves. The nanotube is a cylinder of carbon atoms less than a billionth of the width of a human hair. Buckminsterfullerenes (buckyballs) are spherical groups of 60 carbon atoms. A nanotube stuffed with buckyballs (a peapod) is a goodconductor of heat and electricity. Altering the number of buckyballs in the tube alters the conductive properties of the nanotube. Peapods could be used to build electrical components on a molecular scale.
