Caption: Earthship home interior, Taos, New Mexico, USA. Earthship buildings are a type of passive solar home, made of natural and recycled materials. They are built to minimise environmental impact and to use local resources, such as sunlight. Solar panels are used to generate electricity, and glass windows to trap warmth. The first Earthship homes were designed in the 1970s by Mike Reynolds, founder of Earthship Biotecture.
