Caption: White bryony stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a white bryony (Bryonia dioica) stem. At the centre of the stem is the pith, consisting of parenchyma cells. Around this is a ring of vascular bundles. Each bundle contains phloem (dark green) and xylem (red) cells, which transport carbohydrates and water around the plant respectively. Outside of these is the cortex, which is also made of parenchyma cells. The outer layer of the stem is the cuticle (dark green). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
