Caption: This is an illustration of the influenza virus and how it infects a cell and multiplies within it. The influenza virus contains an outer lipid layer (light blue) and an inner capsid layer (orange), which envelop eight strands of RNA (green). The entire virus is coated with spike-like projections (orange), that aid the virus in recognizing and attaching to a host cell. Upon entering a host cell, the flu virus gives up its RNA, which will interact with the cellular RNA (orange) and produce more of the same viral components. The cell then acts as a manufacturing plant for the influenza virus.
