Caption

Sudan 4 molecule. Computer model of a molecule of the dye Sudan 4. The atoms are represented as rods and are colour-coded: carbon (light blue), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (dark blue) and oxygen (red). Sudan 4 is a red industrial dye. It is used to colour oils, waxes, petrol and shoe and floor polishes. It is also used to colour food products, although its use has been banned in the European Union since 1995 when it was found to cause malignant (cancerous) tumours in rats fed on the dye.
