Cirrhosis is a condition in which the liver responds to injury or death of cells by producing interlacing strands of fibrous scar tissue between the active liver lobules. It is often caused by excessive consumption of alcohol damaging the liver. In cryptogenic cirrhosis, the cause is not known.
