Caption: Menthol. Molecular model of menthol, an organic compound, either obtained from peppermint or mint oils, or made synthetically. Menthol is used in liqueurs and confectionary for flavour and as a non-prescription drug to relieve minor sore throat or mouth irritation. Its local anaesthetic, antipruritic (reduces itching) and cooling properties make it a popular ingredient in cough preparations, nasal inhalants and cigarettes. Atoms are colour-coded: hydrogen (white), carbon (grey) and oxygen (red).
