Caption: Muscone. Molecular model of muscone, an organic compound that is the primary contributor to the odour of musk. Musk is an aromatic substance produced as a glandular secretion by the male musk deer. A similar substance is produced by males of certain other mammals, such as the civet and otter. It acts as a territorial marker and a sexual attractant. A sought after odour in the perfume industry, musk and its componants are now artificially synthesised since obtaining them requires killing the endangered animal. Atoms are colour-coded: hydrogen (white), oxygen (red) and carbon (grey).
