Caption: Light micrograph of a section through the wall of the small intestine. At left is the lumen through which food passes. The epithelial lining of the small intestine is heavily folded, made up of finger-like projections called villi. Villi have a simple surface epithelium made of enterocytes and goblet cells (white circles) involved in absorption and digestion of nutrients. At the base of the villi are circular Crypts of Lieberkuhn. Inside the villi are blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. Magnification: x25 at 24x36mm size.
