Caption: Masatoshi Koshiba (b.1926), Japanese physicist. Koshiba constructed an underground detector in a zinc mine in Japan in the 1980s, based on Raymond Davis' work, in order to detect neutrinos (subatomic particles) emitted by the Sun. The results of his experiment supported those achieved by Raymond Davis, and for this he was awarded a third of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physics (the other thirds went to Raymond Davis and Riccardo Giacconi) for pioneering contributions to astrophysics.
