Caption: Victim of River Blindess, or Onchoceriasm in a village near Red Volta River. It is caused by Onchocerca volvulus, a nematode that can live in the body for as long as fifteen years. The virus is transmitted through black flies which breed in swiftly moving waters of rivers. The effect is generally debilitating, and after ten years of so the victims become blind. The resulting loss to the workforce is immeasurable.
