Caption: Three views of the human heart. Anatomical illustration from Anatomie generale des visceres by Gautier d'Agoty. This monumental work is thought to have been printed in Paris in 1752. Gautier associated himself with surgeon Jacques-Francois-Marie Duverney (1661-1748) and together the two produced a number of large, colorful anatomical atlases, which were noted more for their style and sometimes their shocking appearance than their usefulness to physicians. After Duverney's death, Antoine Mertrud (d. 1767) also worked with the printer to create several other anatomical works. Jacques Gautier d'Agoty died in Paris in 1785.
