Caption: Fallow deer. Male (right) and female fallow deer (Dama dama) with a young fawn. The stag still has the vascular layer of velvet covering its antlers. This layer supplies oxygen and nutrients to the growing bone. Once the antlers are fully grown, the velvet is shed and the antlers' bone dies. Photographed in Israel.
