Caption: Computer graphics representation of a butane molecule (chemical formula C4H10). The molecule consists of a zig-zag chain of four carbon atoms (purple), each with several hydrogen atoms attached (orange). The carbon atoms at the ends of the chain have three hydrogen atoms whereas the inner carbon atoms have only two. Butane is the fourth member of the alkane series; ethane, methane, propane, butane, pentane etc. . It is a gaseous hydrocarbon obtained from petroleum. It can be easily liquified under pressure and is supplied in cylinders for use as a fuel gas.
