Caption: Computer graphics representation of a molecule of ethane (chemical formula C2H6), shown in its staggered conformational form. The two methyl groups (CH3) comprising an ethane molecule are able to rotate freely about the carbon-carbon (C- C) bond. Consequently, an infinite number of ways exist for the relative positions of hydrogen atoms in each of the methyl groups. These different forms are called conformations. At one extreme is an eclipsed conformation, with the hydrogen atoms most crowded together, giving a high-energy, unstable molecule. The other extreme is a staggered conformation, with the hydrogen atoms farthest apart in a low energy, stable molecule.
