Caption: Spur-winged plover and chicks. Spur-winged plovers (Vanellus spinosus), or spur-winged lapwings, inhabit wetlands and coastal areas from the eastern Mediterranean across northern Africa, to the Arabian peninsula. Plovers make their nests in a scrape on the ground and will viciously attack intruders to protect their territory and young. Photographed in Israel, in May.
