Caption: Frederick Reines (1918-1998), US physicist. Reines is most famous for his post-war work in nuclear physics, in which he and his colleague Clyde Cowan co-discovered the neutrino. This fundamental particle was detected in 1956 in what is now known as the Cowan and Reines neutrino experiment. A nuclear reactor was used to produce a large number of neutrinos, and large volumes of water and sensitive detectors were used to detect the elusive particle. For this work, Reines was awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics.
