Caption: Cyclohexane. Computer illustration of a molecule of cyclohexane (formula: C6H12) in its boat confo- rmational form. Atoms are represented as cylinders and are colour-coded: carbon (yellow) and hydrogen (white). This compound is not fixed in this shape, but may alter to assume other conformations, as the carbon-carbon bonds can rotate freely. The boat form has two carbon atoms above the plane of the other four. Only around 1% of cyclohexane molecules exist in this boat form under normal conditions. This is because there are unfavourable interactions between the two raised carbon atoms. See image A705/051 for the chair form.
