Caption: Benzene. Computer model of a molecule of benzene. The atoms are represented as spheres bonded by rods, and are colour-coded: carbon (blue) and hyd- rogen (yellow). Benzene has the chemical formula C6H6. It is a colourless liquid with a characteristic smell. It is highly inflammable and long-term exposure to it is thought to cause cancer. Benzene is obtained commercially from components (fractions) of petroleum. It is used to manufacture other chemicals and as a solvent for many simple organic compounds. The central six- carbon ring is aromatic: the bonding electrons are delocalised through the entire ring rather than being confined to just one carbon-carbon bond.
