Caption: View of the Linac I linear accelerator at DESY (Deutsche Elektronen Synchrotron), Hamburg. Linac I is used to accelerate electrons to energies of 200 million electron volts (200 MeV). Although now superceded by more powerful ring accelerators at DESY, Linac I remains a standby source of electrons for the HERA proton/electron collider ring and the DORIS III electron/positron collider. Linear accelerators such as Linac I are, in effect, hugely scaled-up versions of the electron 'guns' used in cathode ray tubes and conventional television screens.
