Caption: Gamma radiation historical preservation. Preservation experts assessing historical items scheduled to be treated with gamma radiation. This is a rapid and comprehensive treatment used to stop the degradation caused by wood-eating insects and microorganisms. Gamma radiation destroys the parasites. The gamma irradiator being used here can accommodate up to 4 square metres of objects, and thick concrete walls keep the gamma radiation contained. Photographed in France.
