Caption: Roman swords before and after restoration. The civilisation of Ancient Rome existed from the 9th century BC to the 5th century AD. These swords were completely covered with a corrosion product, and were X-rayed to discover what metals they were made from. They were then placed in a sodium sulphate solution to halt the corrosion, and then restored using micro-engraving tools and polishing tools. Photographed in France.
