Caption: Zeolite A crystal, molecular model. Zeolite A is a synthetic alumino-silicate material manufactured for use as a molecular sieve. A molecular sieve is a material containing pores of a specific size, which permit small molecules (such as water) to pass through them while blocking larger ones. They are widely used in industry to purify gases and liquids or as desiccants to remove the water from substances. In synthetic zeolites such as this the pore size can be specified, for example this is an 8ring zeolite, the pores being formed of a ring of eight tetrahedra (grey) of silicon atoms and eight oxygen atoms (red).
