Caption: Platinum crystal, molecular model. Platinum atoms form a cubic close-packed, or face-centred cubic, crystal lattice. In this structure, a layer of atoms lies in the spaces between atoms in the layer below it, and the layer below that lies beneath the spaces in both the layers. The atoms are very tightly packed, filling 74% of the available space. Platinum is a precious metal, used in the chemical industry as a catalyst, and in jewellery.
