Caption: Analysing concrete. A scientist uses an image analysis system linked to a computer and microscope (left) to study the properties of various samples of experimental concrete. Concrete is made from a mixture of cement, sand, stones and water. Its strength and flexibility depend on the nature of the ingredients used, and varying these can produce novel types of concrete with unique properties. This scientist is studying the micro- scopic grains in different types of concrete before subjecting the samples to physical testing.
