Caption: A sample of a superplastically formed ceramic. Ceramic materials are typified by high strength and heat resistance, but also by their brittleness. This new type of ceramic, however, is ductile at high temperatures before the components fuse together. It may therefore be pressed into almost any shape before the process is completed, allowing high strength components to be made in a variety of new shapes. This research is particularly relevant in the aerospace industry.
