Caption: Cenolite filler, scanning electron micrograph (SEM). A filler is a relatively inert material added to a basic resin or adhesive to alter its physical, mechanical, thermal or electrical properties, or to reduce cost. This cenolite filler consists of free-flowing, non-porous, hollow spheres, made from naturally occurring siliceous rocks (silica and aluminium oxide). Applications include insulating paint, rubber manufacturing and lightweight concrete. Magnification: x886 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
