Caption: Photomicrograph of Scotchlite, a material most commonly used on road signs because of its high reflectivity and because it reflects light directly back towards its source. It consists of three layers: an adhesive backing, a layer of tiny glass beads regularly spaced in small vinyl (PVC) "pockets", and a protective top layer of transparent vinyl. Light shining onto Scotchlite is reflected straight back inside each of the tiny glass beads. The photo shows the glass beads (green) packed in amongst their vinyl pockets. Magnification: x75 at 35mm size. (Sept.'84).
