Caption: Ginger leaf. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the midrib of a ginger (Zingiber officinale) leaf. The lower and upper epidermis (blue) are covered with a thick cuticle to minimise water loss. The interior of the leaf is made up of spongy mesophyll and chloroplasts, the site of photosynthesis. At the upper centre of the midrib is the vascular bundle, which consists of xylem (black) and phloem (blue) cells, which transport water and carbohydrates around the plant respectively. Magnification: x45 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
