Caption: Oil industry safety tests. Safety employee measuring the level of dangerous gases on an oil and gas platform. This device measures levels of methane (CH4) and its lower explosive limit (LEL). Oil platforms are used to drill for and pump oil from below the Earth's surface, often from below the seabed. Many of the gases brought up with the oil are flammable and asphyxiating. Photographed in the Gulf of Mexico.
