Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a reflective material used in traffic cones and other safety materials. It consists of a piece of painted plastic material onto which is bonded a monolayer of small resin beads. These beads (coloured variously here) act as lenses to reflect back any light falling on the material. The material is retro-reflective, that is it reflects light primarily back along the path of the incident light beam. The material is most commonly found in belts and stripes attatched to clothing to make the wearer highly visible at night. Magnification: x70 at 6x4.5cm size.
