Caption: Atomic force micrograph at near-atomic scale of a thin co-polymer film on a silicon substrate. With very thin films (in this case about 35 nanometres), co- polymers are unable to form a continuous coating over a surface. Instead the material forms into small 'islands' such as those seen here. Investigating such behaviour is of importance in the coatings industry, enabling the minimum coat thickness for complete coverage to be established for a given co-polymer. Overall magnification is unknown, but the vertical scale has been considerably exaggerated.
