Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph of carbon fibres in an expoy resin matrix. This is a form of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP, popularly called 'carbonfibre'). This material is finding increasing use replacing metal panels in aerospace and motor car applications, and in the production of sports equipment. The material offers a very much better strength to weight ratio than metals for such applications. CFRP is, however, less resistant to extremes of heat. Magnification x770 at 6x7cm size.
